Cognitive Therapy
An evidence-based cognitive-communication evaluation at Michiana Speech Lab includes a full standardized assessment of all functional cognitive domains affected including:
- Attention processes
- Speed of processing
- Short and long-term memory
- Reasoning/problem solving
- Executive function skills (e.g. planning, thought organization)
- Insight and safety awareness
Swallowing Therapy
An evidence-based swallowing evaluation at Michiana Speech Lab includes a thorough cranial nerve exam and clinical swallowing assessment. Swallowing evaluations will be completed by MBSImP certified clinicians utilizing The Modified Barium Swallow Impairment Profile (MBSImP). This is a standardized protocol to interpret and communicate swallowing impairment in a manner that is specific, consistent, accurate, and objective.
Speech/ Language Therapy
An evidence-based speech and language evaluation at Michiana Speech Lab includes a full standardized assessment related to speech sound production, fluency (i.e. stuttering, cluttering), and/or expressive and receptive communication abilities.
Common causes of speech/language deficits in adults include:
- Aphasia or apraxia resulting from a stroke
- Other cognitive-linguistic or language deficits following a traumatic brain injury
- Functional communication impairments related to other syndromes or underlying medical conditions
Voice Therapy
An evidence-based voice evaluation at Michiana Speech Lab includes assessment of impairments related to vocal loudness, pitch, and/or quality. Our speech language pathologists can help reduce hoarseness and teach breathing/voicing techniques to maximize vocal fold function. Patients who may benefit from these services include those who have been diagnosed with a variety of vocal fold pathologies including:
- Incomplete closure or vocal fold bowing
- Muscle tension dysphonia (MTD)
- Vocal fold nodules
- Chronic cough / Irritable larynx syndrome
- Vocal cord dysfunction (VCD) / Exercise Induced Laryngeal Obstruction (EILO)
- Gender affirming (transgender) voice treatment
Pediatric Therapy
Pediatric evaluations and treatments will be completed by our pediatric specialist speech language pathologist. We treat the pediatric population in the areas of articulation, phonology, language, literacy, pragmatics, and AAC. Patients who may benefit from these services include those who have diagnoses including:
-autism spectrum disorder -childhood apraxia of speech -cerebral palsy
-down syndrome -developmental delay -speech sound disorder
-dyslexia
