Frequently Asked Questions
FAQs
How do I get started?
Have a speech therapy referral faxed to Michiana Speech Lab at (574)-544-5977 or emailed to slp@michianaspeechlab.com. You do not need to have a specific diagnosis to be seen by our speech language pathologists. A medical doctor, nurse practitioner, or psychiatrist may sign the referral. Once the referral is received, we will call you to set up a day and time for evaluation. If you do not have a primary care physician, give us a call to discuss scheduling an evaluation.
Do You Take Insurance?
Michiana Speech Lab is a private-pay practice, meaning we are intentionally out-of-network with insurance companies. In doing so, our speech language pathologists and patients are able to have complete control and flexibility related to therapy approaches, number of treatment sessions, therapy duration, etc. In most speech pathology clinics, insurance dictates if and what services are provided, and for how long. By bypassing insurance companies, we are able to offer patient’s one-on-one therapy services that are focused on the patient’s goals without insurance company restrictions.
Payment is expected at the time of service via check, credit/debit card, FSA/HSA card or cash.
We do understand that this is a large investment in our patient’s recovery and care, therefore, superbills for potential insurance reimbursement are offered if requested. A superbill is a detailed receipt of service that contains all of the necessary billing information that insurances require to process claims. Many insurance plans offer out-of-network reimbursement for speech pathology services. However, coverage will depend on your specific plan and policy.
Where Do I Go To Receive Services?
Our clinic is located in downtown South Bend at 227 S Main St, Ste 100, South Bend, IN 46601. If you have significant difficulty with mobility, transportation, etc., for your convenience, we can travel to your home to provide the evaluation and treatments. Additional private locations may be available upon request.
What Ages Do You Work With?
We work with adults of all ages. In addition to adults, we also work with younger patients (e.g., elementary, middle school, high school, college aged) and children.
How Long Does An Evaluation Last?
An evaluation typically lasts 60 minutes. Your speech language pathologist will complete an intake/interview to gather relevant information, discuss your goals, and administer a standardized assessment. The plan for the entirety of your plan of care will then be discussed in detail and agreed upon by both speech language pathologist and patient (and/or family member).
How Often Is Therapy Scheduled?
Your speech language pathologist will develop a treatment plan based on your needs, goals, availability for scheduling, and budget.
